Beckett's Living Room
When it comes to design trends, set decorator Claire Kaufman says the eclectic look offers flexibility in choosing furniture and accessories that reflect a homeowner's personal taste. "It's all in the details," Kaufman says. "Don't ever buy a matching set of furniture. Mix it up. Different looks are good."

In Beckett's living room, a leather modern chair and two deco velvet fabric chairs offer a contrast in style.

Kaufman says you can define rooms in a loft space by contrasting the flooring. Here, the living room space is delineated by the placement of the rug. Burlap drapes with wood blinds are an inexpensive window treatment, echoed in the burlap lampshades.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is not looking at spatial relationships. "When you've got a small space, you don't want big things to overwhelm it," Kaufman says. "Use a tape measure. Draw out a quick overview floor plan and take it with you when you go shopping. That way, you'll know that a seven-foot sofa will fit against your eight-foot wall."

Beckett's Bookshelves
This metal octopus rests on a bookshelf that's filled with more than reading material. Kaufman displayed mixed artwork and photographs on the shelves, reflecting the eclectic style of the living room area.

"Put things on the shelf that reflect your life, whether it's DVDs, CDs, a crystal or family photos," Kaufman says. "Some people are minimalistic and are comfortable with that. I like a lot of layering. I might shop at a very high end store, but there's also good stuff in thrift stores and Target to create an eclectic look."

Beckett's Home Office
This home office reflects Sole's love of beige, tan and neutral colors, while the bright orange curtains in the dining room next door reflect Kaufman's preference for bold color. "It's a good balance for us working together," Kaufman says.

The mix of traditional leather and contemporary metal furnishings show how different textures and styles can work together in a small space.

This contemporary Big Sur table from Crate & Barrel was chosen as the room's focal point to add an extra work area in a loft-size space. The two end chairs have traditional cane backs, while the other four chairs are modern pieces. The Edison bulb chandelier over the table from Plantation lends an interesting modern touch to the room.

"The curtains have a different pattern on each side," Kaufman says. "One side is coral with burgundy tie-dye, and the other side has a cream paisley pattern. When you swing the curtain rod open, the patterns can change the look of the room. The centerpiece on the table can also change the look. You can use a glass terrarium with succulents, various size vases or a bowl where you keep your mail. It becomes a conversation piece."

Beckett's Kitchen
The kitchen in this loft is compact and stylish, with a farmhouse sink as the focal point.

"Most loft spaces are raw and don't have a built-out kitchen," Kaufman says. "We've put in a counter with open shelving (on the left). It's nice to have everything displayed."

Books line the back wall, utilizing the steps as additional shelving. A wood-burning stove along the wall on the right adds an old-fashioned touch to the space.

Overview of Beckett's Kitchen
This wood table was converted into a cooktop island by adding diamond plate to the top and extensions to the legs to bring it to counter height.

"It's very practical in a loft space to do the cooking and conversational space together," Kaufman says. "So we added a couple of old industrial work stools from the 1950s to complement the island. You could also put a chopping block on top."

The old-fashioned feel of the island contrasts with the stainless steel refrigerator, microwave and globe lighting -- again creating an eclectic look.

Beckett's Bedroom
This loft bedroom has a white painted floor with stenciled leaves on it, creating a non-traditional look underneath the traditional headboard and bedposts.

The 1940s Architect's Boom Sconce from Restoration Hardware (a swing-arm lamp for reading) is mounted to the left of the bed. "Beckett is a smart, strong woman, who has a feminine side to her," Kaufman says. "So the bedroom reflects her love of reading, as well as her softer side."

While Beckett's loft was designed for a single woman on a police officer's salary, Castle's home is a spacious loft for three. Living with the best-selling author is his mother Martha Rodgers (Susan Sullivan), a former Broadway actress, and daughter Alexis (Molly Quinn), who's now in college.

With creativity in residence, this grand piano is a beautiful fixture and focal point of the living room. Family photos and fresh flowers complete the look.

While Beckett's bookshelves were held onto the wall with metal brackets, the bookshelves in this upscale home have glass-backed wood shelves and pocket lighting above to spotlight the contents.

Dramatic red walls and tall Corinthian Capital Glass Floor Lamps from Restoration Hardware give this room a look that's both bold and classic. In addition to reading material, the bookshelves hold items from the family's travels and vintage typewriters.

"It's nice to have a collection of something," Kaufman says. "With Castle being a writer, we thought he'd collect old typewriters, like the 1940s Royal (that's on the third shelf down on the left). You can often find things like that on eBay or Craigslist."

Behind the open door is Castle's home office.

Castle's man cave reflects a mixture of modern and traditional, with a vintage leather office chair behind the expansive contemporary-style desk. Pocket lighting in the ceiling bathes the photographs and artwork in a warm light.

The masculine feel of the brown color palette is softened a bit by the area rug, and personal mementos on the desk no doubt have their own stories to tell.

Every home office should reflect its owner's interests, Kaufman notes. Here, Castle's love of fencing is spotlighted by the mask on the wall and a collection of swords in the bucket.

More books fill this room, along with photographs of places that hold meaning for the writer. Nearby is a bar cart for entertaining, or perhaps inspiration for a scene in one of Castle's murder mysteries.

Castle's Dining Room and Kitchen
This contemporary space is sleek with clean lines and modern furniture. The polished hardwood floors provide contrast against the white kitchen motif.

"Castle has a lot of money, but we didn't want to make his home flashy," Kaufman says. "We wanted to create a confident space that's well appointed."

Like Beckett's smaller loft, this kitchen also features a cooktop island with more streamlined bar stools. The open shelving on the side of the island displays china underneath the cooktop. On the right is an extensive wine cellar, housed in its own stainless steel refrigerator.

Castle's Bedroom
Modern and traditional mix in Castle's bedroom, which features a drapery patterned with lines, circles and dots. The wall behind the bed is covered in a silver checkered pattern from Astek Wall Coverings.

The large photo of an elephant on the left side of the bed is from Voila, a store in Los Angeles.

"The design is masculine and strong, yet relaxed like the rest of this loft," Kaufman says. "It is not over done, and doesn't take itself too seriously, just like Castle."
