Castle 2nd Birthday Chat Log

On Saturday March 5th, 2011 CastleTV.net hosted a celebration chat session to recognise Castle’s second birthday on air (Mar 9). The session started off with informal chatter between 9-10pm Eastern which was followed by a group re-watch of the pilot episode “Flowers for your Grave” during which chatters played the “Castle Gummy Bear Game” (a variation on the “drinking game” using Gummy Bears instead of drinks Beckett: “I think I got a pack of gummy bears…”). The game rules were rewritten specifically for the pilot episode.

Towards the end of the episode we were joined by Castle creator Andrew Marlowe and his wife Terri Miller who also produces and writes for Castle. Just as they were leaving Seamus Dever who plays Det Ryan also stopped by with his wife Juliana (who plays Ryan’s fiancée Jenny in the show). For another hour or so after our guests departed we played Castle Trivia with a range of questions about Castle, the fandom, episode quotes and even some Image and Audio guessing games.

Due to popular request we’ve transcribed the chat log.

It is important to note that this was an informal chat session so there were no pre submitted questions. Our guests were happy to just field questions as they were thrown out into the chat room keeping up as best they could. Because the session was informal people could ask questions and speak as they chose. It is important to realise that our guests were very happy with this arrangement and while it’s easy to think they could have been overwhelmed or put off they have all reported back to say how much they enjoyed the chat. During the session they managed to answer a large number of questions from fans and with permission we have transcribed them below for those who were unable to attend.

Terri: Andrew and I were just talking at lunch today about how much Castle has changed us too.

Nerwen Aldarion: Terri Do you know how OCD we alll are? We need a cure, any suggestions? LOL

Terri: Why would we want to cure you? We are the primary cause of your OCD

oysteinsevag: terri m, quick question, i see that you write most of the more comical episodes of castle will the upcoming eps you are writing be in the same vein?

Terri: I like to write funny. My thing.

Terri: I can do the drama, but given a choice, I go for the fanciful, the romantic and the funny

Terri: I also prefer the relationship romcom eps

Terri: I am breaking my next story right now

Terri: I’m writing episode 23… next to last.

xpenguin: Terri – Anything planned for season 4? How about finding out about Castle’s father?

Terri: Castle’s father may be in season 4. Andrew hasn’t decided yet.

Terri: I don’t think the others will have anything to say about the kiss because Castle and Beckett won’t talk about it and no one else was there to see it, so it’s Castle and Beckett’s secret. And our secret as well.

Terri: I have a bunch of favorite episodes.

Terri: I loved A Deadly Game and Sucker Punch and recently Knockdown

Terri: I thought PUNKED was great.

fialka: Terri: why did Kate stop wearing her mother’s ring?

Terri: I think Kate stopped wearing her mother’s ring because of the explosion at her apartment She put it away in a safe place.

Nerwen Aldarion: Will there be a nod to Naked Heat in an upcoming episode?

Terri: There will always be nods to Naked Heat and the upcoming Castle novel Heat Rises in the future too

Terri: Heat Rises is late September this year but you can pre-order on Amazon now! Which is amazing.

WRITER41319: I know your getting bombarded, but also if you’ve gotten any kind of twitter flack for the countdown ending, most of us castle fans are in love with the character developement, i thought it was perfect. I think we all apologize for anyone that might be rude.

Terri: No need to apologize… when you have millions of people watching differences of opinion are expected. Not everyone loves everything… makes the world interesting.

rachelxxray: who actually writes the nikki heat books??? I’ve always wondered

Terri: The Nikki Heat books are written by the ruggedly handsome Richard Castle, silly.

Googie: How many takes do the actors have to do to get those wonderful loaded looks?

Terri: The actors do at least two takes, sometimes more… but we shoot in several sizes… close, medium, etc… and on both sides so we do a scene a number of times before it’s shot out.

sspader1: any chance of the team visiting Canada, as a bit of a nod to your leads? Lochlyn Munro gave me chills in the interrogation room, glad to see he’s a BC boy.

Terri: No plans to go to Canada yet.

enjoytheride: Will we see Castle and Beckett and the rest of the precinct at ‘The Old Haunt’…again? LOVE Castle, BTW.

Terri: We refer to The Old Haunt in a future episode but everytime we go there, we’d have to pay a location fee, so maybe we will build it in the future (that’s from Andrew)

oysteinsevag: Terri, when you write the episodes do you have past episodes to use as primers or guides what happens when your writing concurrently how do you keep the threads connected from episode to episode?

Terri: We have a castle wiki, but honestly, Andrew and I remember almost everything… every once in a while we have to double-check something we’ve said before to keep it consistent.

xpenguin: Terri Will there be a gag-reel on the season 3 DVD?

Terri: We intend to put a gag reel on the season 3 dvd, but the content is up to ABC after we put it together.

christyvourcos: I’m sure this has been asked already..how is the process of writing an episode? I’m an english major and it’s gotten me kind of intrested to write for a tv show some day.

Terri: What’s the writing process? we bang our head against the wall until we see stars and then we write about the stars (that was Marlowe

ACF: Terri Do the books give clues to move the development of the characters on the show forward?

Terri: The books are based on Castle’s experiences with Beckett, so the books refer to the previous season’s adventures

WRITER41319: I know this is old news, but there was scene in "Boom" between Beckett and Alexis. I’ve always wanted know what went on in that scene. A snippet would make my day!

Terri: We were trying to find a way to show you the cut scene between Beckett and Alexis in Boom, but we haven’t found the platform from which to show it to you yet… but we are on it.

sydneydeb: I’d personally like to see everyone a bit more casual sometimes loved Nathan in that v neck jumper in S1

Terri: We’re talking about putting him in softer, more relaxed clothes because he’s so friggin hot in those flannel shirts

Nerwen Aldarion: Terri M any plans for the 100th episode?

Terri: Andrew says he has a plan for the 100th episode. i’ll have to ask him what it is later. Can’t wait to hear what he’s thinking.

xpenguin: Terri – Any chance of getting Nathan and Stana to do the novels in audiobook form?

Terri: Nathan and Stana won’t do the audio books

Terri: It’s not that they refuse, it’s just that it would be way too expensive

Terri: Does Kate love Josh? The way she feels about the men in her lives is complicated. Keep watching until the end of the season and you’ll find out

TappinCastlefan: Terri – This one’s more serious. We all loved seeing Stephen J. Cannell, and miss him. But we also love those poker scenes. Are there any plans for another with the writers? Or even with our favorite detectives and ME??

Terri: There is another poker game coming up!

Terri: It’s in process right now

castleinindia: Terri are there any scenes with Becket’s dad and Castle in the near future ?

Terri: A scene with Jim will probably be in the season finale

Terri: but it will be different than the one we wrote for Knockdown.

Terri: ocd… evil grin… yes, we do.

caskett lover: Terri will you ever be filming in NY again?

Terri: I don’t know if we’ll film in new york again. We’ve talked about it, but it’s not super practical. Someone asked about ny locations earlier. We have a person who shoots location stuff for us in New York when we need it and we use a lot of stock shots.

writerserenyty: Terri, I’ve often compared Castle and Beckett to Mulder and Scully and Close Encounters of the Murderous Kind supported that; did you guys have that in mind with the show? How do you feel about that comparison?

Terri: We had that in mind only in that episode and not in the creation of the show (TM)

Terri: AWM says, in the creation of the show we had Nick and Nora Charles, Tracy and Hepburn, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell in mind, as well as Moonlighting.

Googie: Will any of the remaining episodes of this season be as intense or emotionally charged as Countdown was?

Terri: Yes.. there will be more emotinally intense episodes

Terri: shirtless Nathan? you mean on TV?

Terri: Everything happens to Kate because it makes her good TV!

Terri: If she spent her evenings at home drinking wine and watching TV, you’d be bored.

Terri: AWM- we like to think we have more going on between our characters than bones. Nothing against bones, that’s just what we think.

christyvourcos: Is it possible for Noah Wyle to come onto Castle for at least one episode? I think it would be amazing.

Terri: Noah Wylie… a lot of actors have been mentioned on the board tonight. they’d all be people we’d be excited to work with. we have to deal with people’s availabilities and connecting them to the right role. (AWM)

xpenguin: Terri Which episode of Castle was the most complex – filming wise?

Terri: My magic episode was one of our most difficult and complex episodes to film

Terri: Because of the magic and the locations and the props

Terri: AWM: Two parter was very difficult because we had to cross board and take advantage of locations and film two epsidoses at same time.

theaquamarine: How is Alexis these days? I think you tweeted that she is a senior in college- is that going to rock the boat with her going away and everything?

Terri: Alexis is a junior in hight school.

TappinCastlefan: Terri – Just curious. Did either of you at all expect something as big as this would be possible when you first got the idea?? I can’t imagine anyone thinking there’d be so many OCD fans like us. You really have made a HUGE difference in all of our lives. In many, many ways. <3

Terri: AWM – TAPPIN’ Whenever you make something in the entertainment field you always hope you’ll connect with an audience and it’s very gratifying to have an impact.

mccrae: Terri: some of the publishing in-jokes are great. Do you have a publishing consultant on the show?

Terri: We don’t have a publishing consultant cuz we’re all writers and we’re pretty savvy about that stuff

xpenguin: Terri Will Nathan be doing a book signing at all for "Heat Rises"?

Terri: We don’t know if Nathan will sign yet.

Nerwen Aldarion: Terri Have you or Andrew ever considered doing a bit part in an episodes?

Terri: Not until we lose 30 pounds a piece, but we’ve both considered it… all I have to do is look at myself standing next to Stana to be discouraged.

Seamus_Dever: Piano Man was scripted. We had to get the rights beforehand.

Seamus_Dever: I think we will scene more wedding stuff in season 4.

Seamus_Dever: Yes, glad I don’t have to pay for this one. Budget will be a little bigger too.

Seamus_Dever: I think we’re going to learn more about Ryan next season. He’s sort of an open book. This season there’s some crazy stuff coming at you. Big ending I’m told.

fialka: Ryan was the new guy in S1. When did he join Homicide and where was he before?

Seamus_Dever: Ryan transferred from Narcotics.

xpenguin: Seamus_Dever How many one-liners did you come up with on the "reduce reuse recycle/motor oil" scene on the gag reel? I love that!

Seamus_Dever: The Hamlet one was mine. Reduce reuse recycle was Moira.

sydneydeb: was that Nathan who slapped you Seamus?

Seamus_Dever: Nathan slaps everybody. Jon slapped him back pretty hard last night.

cathy1994: was it fun to do the alternative project with stana katic?

Seamus_Dever: Yes, ATP was great. I think we’re going to do it again and expand the involvement.

Seamus_Dever: Juliana says that she loves working on the show. Everybody is nice and so much fun.

Seamus_Dever: We relax on set by joking around with each other. Telling stories. Jon and I discuss carpentry.Stana and I discuss fashion. Jokes. Nathan told a really dirty one last night. Funny bunch of folks.

Seamus_Dever: I want everyone to meet Ryan’s family. I want to see some emotional content with him too.

Seamus_Dever: The hardest thing about the torture scene was that I had to take out my contacts because the water. I couldn’t see further than 3 feet away. I hate not being to see people that I’m talking to.

KBtheaterlover: Seamus Dever is there a limit on how many t-shirt designs can be submitted for the St. Patrick’s Day Contest?

Seamus_Dever: Yes, you can enter as many times as you want in the st Pats t shirt competition. I won’t be looking at them until the deadline

Seamus_Dever: I like the Celtics only when they play the Lakers. The same is true when the Sox play the Yanks.

Kiley Petersen: We all got to see Ryan propose to Jenny, but Seamus how did you propose to Juliana?

Seamus_Dever: I proposed to Juliana on a beach in ireland

Seamus_Dever: Yes, they even surf in western Ireland

belle_lover: Seamus_Dever Did it ever occur to you with the 3XK plot that Jenny could be a potential victim, knowing how the ending of that episode turned out?

Seamus_Dever: Anything is possible with the 3XK. He’s an interesting wildcard, belle_lover.

Seamus_Dever: Juliana says the fact that I speak Russian was what first attracted her to me. She’s a Russophile.

Seamus_Dever: No, I think Ryan only speaks English and probably Spanish. he grew up in the Bronx. Stana doesn’t speak Russian.

Seamus_Dever: Ryan’s accent comes out every once and a while.

xpenguin: Seamus_Dever Where were you when you found out you got the role of Ryan? How did you find out?

Seamus_Dever: They put me on tape for Ryan, then I went to Italy for a week. When I came back there was the final audition.

Livfaro345: Are the different lapel pins that you & Jon wear on your jackets given to you by wardrobe or sent in by fans?

Seamus_Dever: Our lapel pins are from cops that I know.

xpenguin: Seamus_Dever Did Jon update his 24 apps on his iPhone?

Seamus_Dever: Yes Jon did update his apps and Nathan still is a techno fascist.

Seamus_Dever: I really mess with Juliana’s schedule. I inevitably wake up the dogs when I get home at 3am.

BeckettFan: Any chance of you coming to New Zealand one day? I’ll try and stop the earthquakes for you!

Seamus_Dever: Yes, I will visit New Zealand one day. Stay safe down there.

Clarity: you have two dogs? a beagle and?

Seamus_Dever: I have a beagle and a corgi/shepard mix.
